Marty's Story

Picture of Marty
Marty's gait and pace have improved substantially
in the time he has been participating in the Easter Seals Colorado Restorative Services Program.

A Colorado native, Marty built a successful career with a local municipality for over 20 years. A music buff himself, he was named after singer Marty Robbins, a favorite of his grandmother. Marty led a very active life, participating in many sports. He was an avid softball player, swimmer, hiker and an expert skier. Marty enjoyed the company of a large family and an even larger group of friends. Marty had a great life. On June 16, 2008 all that changed. While at work, he developed a severe headache. He had suffered a stroke. After a period of hospitalization and rehabilitation, Marty was allowed to go home where he lived with family members.

His parents, sisters and friends have been a lifeline for him, ensuring that he received the best medical treatment available. In September 2008, Marty joined the Restorative Services program at Easter Seals Colorado. As a result of his stroke, Marty was paralyzed on the right side of his body. Through the program's therapy components, Marty’s condition has improved substantially. His gait has progressed and his pace has increased. He has greater function in his right arm and feels mentally sharper. Marty has become more independent in activities of daily living such as grooming, bathing, and preparing meals. Marty’s determination has led to his gradual and steady recovery.

Although Marty still has more work to do, he has been able to participate in some of his favorite activities such as socializing with friends, going to ball games, and plans to drive his car again. His long-term goal is to return to work and once again live independently. Marty’s Motto is “No successful sailor has ever come out of a calm sea.”
